The LD compilation of the TV series came in two flavors. S-series which contained four episodes of TV episodes, and P-series which in addition to four TV episodes, contained new OAV episodes. Odd numbered episodes were the conclusion to Schaft conflict and even numbered ones were more or less left up to the discretion of the episode directors. In many instances, the OAV episode reflected what went on in the TV episodes (vol 9 contains TV episode where Noa and Kanuka overcome their difference by drinking silly. the OAV is drinking match between Kumagami and Kanuka)
The title for episode #8, Seven Days of Fire, comes from the Seven Days of Flame, the civilization-ending war in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Mamoru Oshii once made himself the understudy of Hayao Miyazaki. The title is also allegedly a play on Seven Days in May, as the episode involves political satire and Oshii's own experiences in the 1960s student movement in Japan.
In Episode #15, the overall plotline is a take-off of Ultraman episode #39 "Farewell Ultraman", while character setting in the episode are that of Ultra Seven # 49 "The Greatest Invasion pt2." (both of them are last episodes of respective series)
