Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch is a manga created by Mitchiko Yakote and Pink Hinamori. It was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Little Mermaid. The story is about a mermaid named Lucia who falls love with a surfer named Kaito after she retrieves her pink pearl which she had entrusted to him seven years ago after rescuing him from a shipwreck. The manga has been adapted into two anime series. The first is Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. The second is a sequel named Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure comprising mostly of filler episodes and additionally both anime are light-hearted rather than the manga which was darker and more brutal.
