Cover Highschool of the Dead first tankōbon as released by Kadokawa Shoten on March 1, 2007

The chapters of the Highschool of the Dead manga series are written by Daisuke Satō and illustrated by Shōji Satō. The story is released as a monthly serial, with each chapter first being published in Fujimi Shobō's Monthly Dragon Age, and later compiled in tankōbon format as a part of Kadokawa Shoten's "Dragon Jr." line of shōnen manga titles. As of July 2010, six such compilations have been released, the first on March 1, 2007,[1] and the sixth one on July 9, 2010.[2]

In addition to reprinting the chapters from Dragon Age, each tankōbon release contains a list of the weapons prominently featured in that volume, color illustrations of the volume's key scenes, and some also contain omake chapters.

As a new semester begins, Takashi Komuro, Rei Miyamoto, Hisashi Igō, Saya Takagi, Kohta Hirano, Saeko Busujima, Suzuka Marikawa, and Kōichi Shidō are caught up in a zombie attack at their high school. As Hisashi, Rei, and Takashi flee to the roof, Hisashi is bitten by a zombie, resulting in Takashi being forced to kill Hisashi to protect himself and Rei. Rei contacts her father via Takashi's cellphone, getting informed that the city is panicking before the call cuts out. Meanwhile, Saeko rescues Suzuka, while Kohta assembles a jury-rigged nailgun. The survivors fight their way to the school parking lot, where they commandeer a bus, picking up other survivors along the way, against Rei's wishes in the case of Kōichi Shidō.
