Anime Milwaukee is an annual anime convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the United States.
History[]
The Anime Milwaukee Convention (AMKE), held at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM)[1], is the only anime-specific convention in the Greater Milwaukee area, established in February of 2007 by the Japanese Animation Association of Milwaukee. The first convention was held in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Student Union with low attendance due to a blizzard. It has since been referred to as con 0.5 as a result, and the subsequent years have been deemed 1.5, 2.5 and so on to carry on that tradition[2]. Anime Milwaukee began as a one day event but quickly branched into a three day convention over a weekend. The convention also started off as free for all attendees, but soon needed registration fees to provide bigger and better events in subsequent years. Badges are now priced between $5 to $30, dependent on date of purchase, if the attendee is a UWM student, adult, or child, and how many days they will be attending, and children under 6 are free[3]. The convention has since partnered with the Radisson Hotel Milwaukee for the 2010 convention, offering a con discount for hotel rooms[4].
The Anime Milwaukee Convention is helped, run, and sponsored financially by the Japanese Animation Association[2], which is a student organization at UWM, and is further supported and planned by the Vision of Anime club[5], another prominent anime club in the Milwaukee area.
The Anime Milwaukee convention experienced media coverage in 2010. The Morning Blend talk-show featured an AMKE segment on March 5, 2010. [6] The A.V. Club wrote an article about Anime Milwaukee and the article was posted on March 8, 2010. [7] Also, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wrote an article about Anime Milwaukee and the article was in the March 10, 2010 newspaper edition. [8]
